Money Can’t Buy Everything, It’s True

‘Then they faithfully brought in the contributions, tithes and dedicated gifts…’  ~ II Chronicles 31:12a

————————————————

From The Book of Church Order of the Presbyterian Church in America, Chapter 9-2:

‘It is their [the deacons’] duty also to develop the grace of liberality in the members of the church, to devise effective methods of collecting the gifts of the people, and to distribute these gifts among the objects to which they are contributed.’

I have pondered this admonition since my recent time in Officer Training and days such as this coming Sabbath (during which I am scheduled to deliver the Offeratory Prayer) only serve to emphasise it.  What are the best (which is not necessarily synonymous with the most ‘effective’) methods for encourage the members to give liberally of their money to the Church?  Coercion is prohibited (or so I have been told) and persuasion often fails.  (Guilt?)

I am open to–and entreating–suggestions in this area.  What would you advise as the proper course to accomplish this end?  What would you respond well to?

‘… and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, 12so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.’  ~ I Thessalonians 4:11, 12

There is no doubt in our minds that no fewer than 14 shots were fired in the pantry on that evening and that Sirhan did not in fact kill Senator Kennedy,” said Robert Joling, a forensic scientist who has been involved with the Kennedy case for nearly 40 years. He and Van Praag have published a book on the killing this week entitled An Open and Shut Case.’

‘Modern “liberals” who advocate the view that government should provide us with the necessities or alleged necessities of life rarely appreciate that this assistance rests on a system of mass robbery and enslavement that is highly inimical to their professed belief in liberty. In fact, the advocates of such policies present them in quite the opposite light, as enhancing our liberty.’

Iraq is Yugoslavia before the storm. It is a caldron of weapons, lawlessness, hate and criminality that is destined to implode. And the current U.S. policy, born of desperation and defeat, means that when Iraq goes up, the U.S. military will have to scurry like rats for cover.’

‘Joseph Farah’s recent article “Repeal the Johnson Amendment” is right on the money. The Johnson Amendment is wrong and should be abolished. However, one thing Mr. Farah fails to address is the fact that churches bring these restrictions on themselves voluntarily. There is no law that says a church must seek or obtain 501(c)3 status to avoid a tax liability. In fact, by becoming 501(c)3 they subject themselves to such IRS regulation. When a church decides to operate as a “business” instead of a church, why should we be surprised that they are subject to public policy restrictions just like any other corporation?‘The church is a living organism; it is not an organization or corporation. A properly formed and functioning church is tax-free instead of tax-exempt. Tax-exemption means that there is an obligation to pay the tax but that obligation is set aside by legislation. Of course, that means that the exemption is subject to the rules of the entity granting the exemption and can be removed at any time. However, tax-free means that the church is not subject to the tax because there is no obligation for the tax in the first place. No obligation equals no liability. This is the lawful and historic character of a properly functioning church. The churches were duped and are still being duped into accepting 501(c)3 corporation status.‘Churches need to stop functioning as businesses and return to their roots of operating as the Body of Christ, not The Body of Christ, Inc.’

Ever since Been-hameen Krajca got his noggin protector, I have been nagged and nagged by the feeling that I had seen a helmet like that before.

To-day it finally hit me: It’s from the 1980’s movie ‘Tron‘!
