‘My people— infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them.  O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths.’  ~ Isaiah 3:12

I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races – that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And in as much as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.’  ~ Abraham Lincoln

  1. I know it’s not traditional in our society, but why must it be emasculating for a man to actively choose to change his name to his wife’s? Lots of culture pass down family names through the women without abandoning masculinity, or even male leadership in the religion or culture. Or, did I miss something in the story?…

  2. Well, I unapologetically believe in biblical patriarchy where the man is the head of the wife and family and to me, the emasculating aspects of such a situation as described in the story are self-evident. It is not very popular to-day and may seem insignificant to others but to me, it is just another example of the march towards androgeny and/ or matriarchy in our society.
