  1. A Chicken Question:
Michael and I were having a discussion regarding the sex of chickens. Is there such a thing as a male chicken or is a rooster a male chicken? We knew our chicken expert friend could shed some light on our late-night-we-should-be-sleeping disagreement. 🙂

  2. Sure thing; buckle up ’cause here we go. A male chicken that is younger than one year is called a cockerel, after a year they are called a cock or a rooster. Female chickens younger than one year are pullets and those older are hens.

Cockerels rarely survive to roosterdom because they are killed and eaten. (They don’t lay eggs and there is no sense in spending money to feed them.) Of course, you want to keep one or two to fertilise the eggs if you want to hatch your own chicks.

Pullets are worth their weight in gold if they are good layers. That is why they cost a bit more when you buy them from the hatchery.

    Hope that helps!

  3. Thanks for proving me right in my conversation with Michael. I knew you were a fountain of chicken information. 😉
