‘An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.’  ~ II Timothy 2:5

Due to the incessant (and celebrated) showboating and ‘All Eyes On Me’ mentality that plagues sports from Pop Warner football to the NBA, it is refreshing and heartening to read of honourable acts of sportsmanship.  Such was the case during a recent high school basketball game in Wisconsin recently:

Something else was on [Coach] Dave Rohlman’s mind when he asked for a volunteer to shoot two free throws awarded his team on a technical foul in the second quarter. His senior captain raised his hand, ready to go to the line as he had many times before.

Only this time it was different.

“You realize you’re going to miss them, don’t you?” Rohlman said.

Once upon a time, sporting activities were the means by which young men were taught chivalry, honour, and courage without needing to resort to actual combat in order to do so.  I pray that incidents of respect and sportsmanship once again become the norm in sports, rather than merely a refreshing exception–at all levels.
